 achievements

  • On 29 April 1984, the Unit announced the birth of the first test tube baby in Africa and South Africa. Since then more than 1000 babies has been born due to IVF/GIFT treatment.
  • Shortly afterwards, the Unit reported the first test tube twins as well as the first frozen embryo pregnancy in Africa.
  • On 20 November 1995 the Unit reported the birth of the first ICSI-baby in South Africa.
  • Since then, more than 117 babies were born as a result of the ICSI-technology used by the Unit and a further 100 mothers are pregnant with ICSI babies.
  • Another recent breakthrough was the implementation of computer technology to predict fertility and to assist in clinical decision-making. The technology is used to evaluate semen samples. If the percentage of normal sperm is low, ICSI technology is considered to optimise treatment.
  • The Unit uses endoscopic procedures for infertility and gynaecological conditions and trains students in this field.
