hair restoration clinic |

Leaders in the field of hair transplantation in South Africa, the entire staff
at the specialist clinic is dedicated to redefining the standards by which hair
transplantation is judged.
In keeping with its state-of-the-art facilities and technology, surgical
excellence and adherence to the highest standards of medical practice, the
clinic is completely committed to protecting the privacy and confidentiality of
its clients. Patients are fully informed of the results that they can expect
and the clinic even offers a 100% guarantee, provided patients follow pre- and
post-operative instructions. Grafts that do not grow will be replaced at no
extra charge.
The first hair transplant was carried out in Japan in 1939, with the procedure
gaining visibility from 1959 onwards in the USA. But it is only since the late
‘80s that the techniques have been developed that now result in a
completely natural appearance: grafts are smaller than ever, with between one
and three hair follicles used in every transplant session … and the
result is great-looking natural hair, not only when it’s just been
brushed, but even when the wind is blowing or when the hair is wet.
State-of-the-art hair transplants produce minimal discomfort, both during and
after the procedure.
The duration of the procedure obviously depends on the size of the area being
treated and a number of consecutive grafts may be required. The process is not
instantaneous and, in fact, the hairs in the transplanted grafts are usually
shed after between two and eight weeks, if not earlier; the grafts usually
remain bare for a period of 10 – 14 weeks, during which the follicles
recuperate and start generating new growth. A new generation of hair normally
starts to grow by the 12th week after transplantation, but may take up to 20
weeks. Once the new hairs start to grow, however, they grow at the same rate as
in their additional location.
A crust or scab will form over each graft shortly after the procedure and they
remain visible during the one-week healing period, but once they’ve
fallen off, the slit grafts will be virtually undetectable within seven to 10
days. Some of the patient’s own hair may also fall out during the
scab-shedding process, but this is perfectly normal and this hair will grow
again.
Following the transplantation of a large area, the forehead may swell slightly,
but this usually only lasts for two to four days. Occasionally, however, the
swelling can be severe enough to cause puffiness around the eyes (about one in
50 patients suffers swelling that causes black eyes) that starts after two to
three days and lasts between three and five days. Swelling is most likely after
the first session – it’s recommended that you schedule a few
days’ leave after the first treatment – and usually occurs in a
much milder form, if at all, during subsequent sessions.
The swelling is always temporary and has no adverse effect on the healing of the
grafts.
Patients should avoid strenuous exercise for 10 – 14 days after surgery
and, while loose-fitting wigs and hats can be worn, hard hats or tight-fitting
helmets should be avoided for at least two weeks. The scalp may be gently
shampooed from the third day after the transplantation and, once the sutures
have been removed, all normal activity can be resumed.
Hair-transplant surgery is the only effective way to achieve natural-looking
hair and a normal hairline after hair loss. At the Medical Hair Restoration
Clinic the procedure is carried out safely by specialists under leading-edge
conditions that are on a par with those at similar facilities worldwide –
with excellent results … at a fraction of the cost.

why does hair
loss occur? |
 |
|
|
Hair loss occurs to some extent in 60-70% of all men, and 4-8% of women. This
balding process is caused by hereditary factors. You inherit the tendency to
lose hair from either of your parents. This is transmitted in your genes. You
may even have this tendency despite the fact that your parents have full heads
of hair - this is due to a process known as spontaneous mutation, whereby the
genetic information changes at conception.
Hair loss can also occur following events such as trauma, radiation therapy,
burns and surgery. This is often amenable to transplantation, as the donor
sites can often be excellent. A large number of drugs and diseases cause hair
loss. This hair loss is only reversible once the initial cause has been
remedied. Hair transplantation is not the answer in these cases. If you suffer
from a scalp disease, you should consult a dermatologist.

hair
transplantation |
 |
|
|
Hair transplantation is the natural and permanent way to bring back living,
growing hair to areas thinning and balding. It is also recommended by medical
authorities as the safest and most effective proven procedure for permanently
restoring hair.
Today's hair transplantation owes its success to the fact that the transplanted
hair follicles (roots moved from their original location to another area)
behave in the same way as they did in their original site. For example, even in
the most advanced cases of male pattern baldness, a horseshoe-shaped fringe of
hair persists. Hair follicles moved from this hairy fringe to the bald area on
your scalp will take root and grow.
Hair transplantation is a minor surgical procedure performed on an outpatient
basis in our fully equipped theatres.
Bear in mind that hair loss is a lifelong process and further procedures may be
necessary to fill in ongoing hair loss. The transplanted hair, however, will
never fall out.
Any completely bald area can be restored in 2-3 sessions.
It is worthwhile to have 1 or 2 early transplanting sessions before your hair
has reached an advanced stage. The benefits of early sessions are threefold:
-
Your remaining hair provides natural camouflage for the initial sessions
-
Your transplanted hair (once it has grown) will persist, thus providing
additional cover for any later sessions
-
Your sessions can be spaced further apart, thus spreading your cost over a
longer period

your assessment |
 |
|
| |
During your private consultation, your hair will be assessed as to pattern of
loss, donor-hair density, color, texture, and the expected results. You will be
given an appraisal of your goals, and a quote as to expected costs. Should you
live a long distance from our practice, you may send photographs of yourself,
via either e-mail or the postal services, and we shall give you an assessment
of your requirements for hair-transplant surgery.

the procedure |
 |
|
|
At the start of each procedure, you are given a mild tranquilizer that
minimizes anxiety and reduces discomfort. Your donor and recipient areas are
anaesthetized by injecting a local anaesthetic using a very small-gauge needle
(anaesthetizing these areas may be slightly painful). A strip of hair-bearing
skin is then removed from the back and sides of your head where there is
permanent hair. This site is then sutured closed. The donor hair is then
dissected into tiny grafts containing 1-3 hairs. These are placed into tiny
slits in your recipient area. Your body's natural "glue" will anchor
the grafts in place within minutes.
Your scalp (hairy or bald) has an excellent blood supply, so a minimal amount of
bleeding during the transplant procedure is expected. This is easily controlled
by applying pressure.
Your hair surrounding the donor area completely camouflages the stitches in the
donor site. In order to ensure better coverage; leave the hair in this area at
least 3 - 5 cm long.

after the
procedure |
 |
|
|
Sutures are removed 10 to 12 days after the procedure.
A crust or scab will form over each graft shortly after the procedure. Once the
area has healed, these will separate from the scalp and fall off. Although
these crusts are visible during the one-week healing period, you can often
camouflage them by combing the adjacent hair over the transplanted site. If you
wear a hairpiece, it may be used to conceal the crusts after the first week
(but it should be worn as little as possible during the second week). The slit
grafts will be virtually undetectable within 7 - 10 days.
The hairs in the transplanted grafts are shed between 2 and 8 weeks after the
procedure. Many of these hairs will fall out together with the crusts;
occasionally they persist for longer. A few of the transplanted follicles may
not shed their hair at all, but will continue to grow immediately after the
procedure. The grafts are usually bare for a period of 10-14 weeks after the
operation, during which time the hairs are shed and the follicles recuperate to
produce new hair - this is normal. A new generation of hair starts to grow by
the 12th week after transplanting, but this may occur slightly earlier, or up
to 8 weeks later, in individual patients. These hairs grow at the same rate as
they did in their original location.
Be patient as full results will be apparent only 8 months to 1 year later.
When a large area is transplanted, swelling of the forehead may occur. While
this is usually mild, lasting 2-4 days, it can occasionally be severe enough to
cause a large amount of puffiness round the eyes (approximately 1 out of 50
patients has swelling bad enough to cause black eyes). This swelling generally
begins 2 - 3 days after the procedure, and lasts 3 - 5 days. Swelling is most
likely after the first session, but with subsequent treatments it usually
occurs in a milder form or not at all.

the bald truth
about hair loss |
 |
|
|
Although we live in a technologically advanced era, with information available
to us at the touch of a computer screen, when it comes to hair loss, we are
still bombarded with false and outdated
facts. Because more than 75% of males
and approximately 8% of females suffer from baldness, there is a massive market
of people eager to accept bogus treatments in order to restore their crowning
glory.
It is a worldwide accepted scientific fact that we do not lose hair because of a
lack of blood flow to the scalp. If this common myth were true, then every bald
person would have gangrenous skin and their scalp would rot. It is also logical
that if there where not sufficient blood flow to the scalp, a bald person would
not bleed if they cut their head. Genetic hair loss is an inherited condition
which is not life threatening, but has powerful psychological implications for
the sufferer. It is caused by a sensitivity of the hair follicle (root) to the
male hormone (testosterone).
It is a progressive disease which results in a progressive thinning of the hair,
which eventually becomes miniaturized and disappears. Once the hair has fallen
out and bald skin appears no prayers, potions, lotions nor laser therapy could
ever restore the lost hair. Despite the fact that there are thousands of
quick-fix remedies and potions, the US Federal Drug Administration (FDA) has
only approved two products to prevent further hair loss, namely Propecia
(Finasteride) and Regaine (Minoxidil). Although both have a role to play in the
treatment of hair loss, they have their limitations.
There are no magic or miraculous cures for baldness.
Despite the massive advertising campaigns of ruthless businesspeople preying on
the vulnerabilities of bald people to make a quick buck. The most expensive
treatment is the treatment that doesn't work. Even if it cost R1; it is still a
waste of money. Hair transplantation is the only permanent solution to this
age-long problem. Hair is replaced in a natural and undetectable fashion. Using
the latest international techniques, hair is relocated from an area where it is
not pre-pro-grammed to fall out (donor area on the sides of the head). The
procedure is performed under local anaesthetic and is less painful than a visit
to the dentist.
It is totally undetectable and no one will be aware that it has been done. The
transplanted follicles only start growing three to four months following the
procedure. Because these follicles are not predisposed to fall out, they will
continue to grow forever. The transplanted hair will never fall out. Our
doctors at the clinic have performed more than 3000 procedures and offer all
their patients a 100% guarantee.
Today baldness is an option - it is no longer compulsory.
